Shocking spear tackle on Olly Barkley

Olly Barkley stood out for England in what was an otherwise dismal performance. The United States are hardly a rugby super-power but managed to at least look competitive against the World Champions, England.

Here, in the final seconds of match, we see an unfortunate incident. Olly Barkley is upended by American centre Paul Emerick. Surely there was little malice, but it was still very dangerous. Luckily Barkley got up and seemed fine afterwards.

Update: Emerick received a 5 match suspension for this tackle, therefore ending his World Cup.

As the tournament wears on, the games will get bigger. Which means the hits will get bigger. Keep coming back as we add to the biggest archive of great rugby clips on the internet, Rugbydump.com.

  • Ouch.. Huge hit.. i guess u cant look down on the "smaller" nations haha

By Anonymous Anonymous, at September 10, 2007 11:15 am

  • Anyone can dump someone mate, not a case where Berkley "looked down" on him so got speared!

Cueto would have kicked his arse.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at September 10, 2007 11:20 am

  • I reckon that the performance - as dismal as it was - still turned out to be a win, which is all that matters in the end.

englands main problem was slow ball - dallaglio the so called experienced forward showing that he is simply to old to keep up with the pace. as a result england lost a lot of ball and also could not get the ball out to the backs, where the likes of robinson and lewsey would danced and stepped their way to the line. small changes need to be made in the team and the gameplan that will cause a big change in performance and ultimately the score

  • Should have been a red.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at September 10, 2007 3:00 pm

  • I agree, this debate has been going on for a while on this site and that is definitely one of the worse spear tackles on here. If that was not a red I really dont know what is!

All we want is consistant reffereeing!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at September 10, 2007 3:14 pm

  • Look at the clip "Morne Steyn red carded for a spear tackle" in the archives

That was nothing compared to this one. Worse than McCaw-Tuqiri

    Should have been red.

If Vickery get's banned, that mug should be x 2

PS England were awful, but at least not as bad as Ireland

By Anonymous Anonymous, at September 10, 2007 4:18 pm

  • i reckon the mccaw-tuqiri was worst than this one, but still it's bad

By Anonymous Anonymous, at September 10, 2007 4:41 pm

  • yeah it was dangerous alright. but how shit were england in that game. there seems to be no idea within that team.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at September 10, 2007 6:35 pm

  • should have been a red and a ban. thats just gettin too cocky and thinkin that it makes him hard, when anyone can do that, but they choose not to

By Anonymous Anonymous, at September 10, 2007 7:52 pm

  • i feel the would have been more of a debate about it had Barkley broken his neck, but he easily could have. What use is a red card if its never shown?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at September 10, 2007 8:34 pm

  • Dont worry, the BOKKE will sort him out. I would like to see him spear some of us. Samoans and tongans should punish the yanks aswell.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at September 10, 2007 8:34 pm

  • That was a real shame, because the culprit, Emerick was actually having a good game, so its a shame had to "piss on his own parade" so to speak

By Anonymous Anonymous, at September 10, 2007 9:46 pm

  • USA played tough defense the entire game. Pity Emerick got a bit carried away in the end. Still though, didn't see any yellow card coming out for the blatant trip by Vickery earlier in the match.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at September 10, 2007 10:41 pm

  • That was not a red card offense. Get over it.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at September 10, 2007 11:36 pm

  • Come on...Yellow card defense, but no red. How about the kicking of the ankle on the US break? No penalty, nothing recorded....ridiculous. ask for consistency, the call it both ways.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at September 11, 2007 12:26 am

  • yellow card?????
this is rugby, it was a great tackle!
If an All Black tackles like that, the referee will continue with the game.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at September 11, 2007 1:49 am

  • The two fouls are very different.

One (Emerick's) began as an honest "rugby play" that ended up in over exuberance.

The other (Vickery's) is foul play. A trip / leg whip in rugby has no honest beginning, middle, or end to it.

Emerick's was more phyiscally dangerous to the player. Vickery's however was more unsportsmanlike.

While both may be rotten, one's a rotten apple, the other's a rotten orange

  • you sack-less poofs!!! who cares??? he a pom 4 christ sake the more of them tht got broken at the cup the better....

and andy farrell?? whatta waste of time, just a big, dumb, pisshead, bird-brain like every other aussie league player... you hav even resorted to the same tactics as the crim in puting them in your union teams... weak!!!

HERES A MESSAGE FOR YOU ENGLAND:
grow up, find your balls if they have dropped, stop poaching all the other half decent footy players from around the world and knuckle up and do the dirty work!!!!!!! or just like football is in england you will be destined 2 fail 4eva mor.

    wankers

  • That is worth 2 points where Paul is from! (IOWA)

Nothing but a take down on the wrestling take down!

Sorry the English are so fragile!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at September 11, 2007 4:16 am

  • I don't believe Paul Emerick meant to cause harm he, it looks like the little English fellows momentum caused him to be speared tackled. Anyway this was a great game to watch from a US fan, I would be surprised to see England make it past 1st stage of pool play. Man they suck.

Hope the US can take 2 out of the next three. GO EAGLES!!! (PA,USA)

By Anonymous Anonymous, at September 11, 2007 4:52 am

  • I don't see how the English guy can be blamed for getting speared?

The tackler seemed to slip as he was making the tackle, hence the spear. But the rules say if you pick someone up, you have to ensure they come down safely.

    1. SA (RWC runners-up)
    2. England (Only cos they've got the fitness, skill and discipline over Samoa & will end up losing to
    Oz in 1/4 final)
    3. Samoa (Will be leading England with 10mins to go, then self-destruct)
    4. USA
    5. Tonga

By Anonymous Anonymous, at September 11, 2007 10:23 am

  • I love way half the losers on here clearly have no fuckin idea about rugby, whether you think you are hard and can take a spear tackle, or the english are weak and cant take them, its the still illegal in rugby law (do people NEVER realise that!) If Emerick had punched him in the face you'd still go on saying "well he is english blah blah blah" change the fucking shirts and its still illegal so get over it!!!!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at September 11, 2007 3:39 pm

  • That was the best laugh I've had all day; 'his momentum caused him to be speared tackled'!!!

Do any of the blokes who put messages on this site actually play rugby? If you smash someone on the pitch, you smash them with all your body weight. If you pick up a 14 stone player and try and dump him on his head you are doing it on purpose.

Just fucking face facts. Spear tackles are done on purpose. They should be red cards. Deal with it.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at September 11, 2007 4:58 pm

  • USA centre Paul Emerick has been banned for five weeks

    Extra, extra.....!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at September 11, 2007 5:44 pm

  • Emerick's tourno is over.

It's good to see that they are clamping down on spearing if the ref doesn't!

Hopefully that will make players think twice about it!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at September 11, 2007 6:28 pm

  • No. 7 you should stop being an American Hater. Yeah we Americans take pride in our sports and in being Americans but if the guy punched your guy in the face most of us would call it dirty like the guy next to us would. We don't spit in the face of our competators and think our shit doesn't stink. Enough of the Blah Blah Blah. Dirty is dirty. It's a shame Paul got suspended but he did comit a rugby crime and the worst of them but I agree with the last poster from the US even though he most likly never played Rugby. This was a funny spear tackle. I have seen a bunch on the pitch but nothing like this. I don't want to use the word momentum but it just wasn't natural on either end.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at September 11, 2007 6:37 pm

  • Why do people have to come on here a slag others off! Rugby is suppose to be a game of respect!!!! If you want to act like footballers (soccer my american friends) :) can I suggest going on YouTube with the other immanture little children and making those crap comments! England played poorly and the USA really stuck it out and full credit to them! However, nobody deserves to have their neck broken and life smashed to pieces, regardless of nation. And I do hope that those of you who do make comments like that really do play rugby because hopefully one day we can meet and have a little discussion on the pitch! I'll be the one stood behind my forwards :p

  • Actually in Freestyle wrestling, that is a 4 point move...3 for the throw from the feet to the back, and 1 point for the lift.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at September 11, 2007 7:34 pm

  • A very rich post there claiming we poach the best players in the world- the aussies and kiwis (Which by calling us Poms you are) are the worst in the universe for it- i could name a hundred players at least for each country who weren't born there!
As for the Americans, absolutely clueless aren't they?!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at September 11, 2007 7:38 pm

  • Oh yeah- bad tackle. Emmerick was probably out for revenge after he was tripped but spear tackles should be straight red with a lengthy ban. Seen one guy in a match here who fused the vertebrae in his neck when he was speared!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at September 11, 2007 7:41 pm

  • should've been a red!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at September 11, 2007 7:44 pm

  • five match ban....

By Blogger Lizzie Marsom, at September 11, 2007 8:11 pm

  • I THOUGHT HE WAS TRIPPED UP WAY EARLIER IN THE MATCH. SO I DON'T SEE A REVENGE FACTOR. THEN AGAIN WE ARE NOT WATCHING LIVE LIKE THE REST OF THE WORLD. TAPE DELAY FOR MOST OF US IN THE US WHO CAN'T FORK UP THE $175. THE FUNNY THING IS ESPN, THE LARGEST WORLDWIDE SPORTS NEW NETWORK AND MOST HITS ON ITS WEBSITE, DOESN'T EVEN HAVE RUGBY AS AN ACTIVE TOOLBAR. IT'S LISTED UNDER "OTHER SPORTS" SO YOU CAN SEE WHERE THE INTREST LIES HERE. MORE PEOPLE ARE CONCERNED WITH THE SAINTS ONLY PUTTING UP 10 POINTS OPENING NIGHT. AND WERE TALKING ABOUT THE 3RD LARGEST WATCHED SPORTING EVENT IN THE WORK. US AMERICANS HAVE TO WAKE UP AND LOVE THIS SPORT FOR WHAT IT'S WORTH. THAT SPEAR DOESN'T HELP THOUGH.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at September 11, 2007 8:41 pm

  • Well now that the former wrestler, has been banned for 5 weeks. Lets move forward.

  • The Kiwis and Ozs indeed are masters of identifying young islander rugby talent early, and then offering the young boys an opportunity to come trade grass skirts for sheep, at the so-called "academies".

The kids then grow up, and either move on to pro rugby in SANZAR, or to higher education. These kids also probably face a tough decision -- they have a higher standard of living which perhaps they don't want to give up.

Perhaps a pro soccer model makes more sense here. Pro soccer CLUBS pick players up young from the less-developed world, but relatively few of these players then trade away their flags.

I wish rugby could come up with a way (i.e. $$$) to ensure that these kids don't find the same temptation to ingore their homeland once they've made it big.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at September 11, 2007 11:02 pm

  • I thought Emerick had one of the best performances of any of the emerging rugby nations - he had an excellent game exept where he had a brain fart and spear barkley which tainted a good performance by him.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at September 11, 2007 11:47 pm

  • So is this site run by englishmen, or are they going to put the video of vickery tripping a US player?

Speak tackles are bad, and dangerous, dont get me wrong, but sometimes they are inevitable. You tackle someone low enough at the legs and just stand up, the weight of the guy you are tackling will force his head to fall first. I dont think spear tackles are always done on purpose.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at September 12, 2007 12:18 am

  • Cheyanquí, once again you prove yourself a knob with a chip on your shoulder. And no idea of the actual facts - so you continue to spout prejudice and rubbish instead. New Zealand is a Polynesian country, deal with it.

Yes, there are probably more than 100 players from the 1000+ All Blacks that were born overseas, and a fair number of those would have been from the Pacific Isles. But where you are born is not the story.

Are you saying that the evil magicians in charge of the ABs selection identified Jerry Collins' as a future All Black at the age of 2 and spirited his family away from Samoa? Likewise Muliaina and So'oialo? And did the same to Tongan born Lauaki? Wow, the NZ selectors must be almost god-like in their ability to pick future stars!

The fact is that many islanders come to NZ to further themselves, not just for rugby - Auckland is now the largest Polynesian city in the world.

Why don't you and other recyclers of this rubbish point out that most of NZs best players are being poached by the Northern Hemisphere clubs? You should be worried about the fact your own sides have no interest in developing talent close to home.

And one last fact - the team in the RWC that has the most foreign born players? Samoa. Nearly half of their team were born in NZ.

  • in fairness to Emery, you can see he's realised what he's done and let HIS body hit the ground and not Ollies. he really lets the pressure off at the end and doesn't drive him into the gound, yellow was a good call. Still a horrible tackle tho....

By Anonymous Anonymous, at September 12, 2007 5:40 am

  • it did deserve a red. don't think there was any premeditation, emmerick is just an average player who got himself into a bad situation and couldn't do anything about it.

did anyone else see a couple of all blacks dropping italians on their heads in the second half or was it just my imagination? think it happened twice, once by jerry collins.

When you make a tackle like that you have a duty to control the player whilst he's in the air. That s what he has been punished for. I think you'll find if he had drilled his head into the ground a) Oli Barkley would be in a wheelchair and b) Emerick wouldn't be playing rugby for a long time. The puishment he has received is fair.

  • Should have been a red and longer ban. If that wasn't a red what is!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at September 19, 2007 6:12 pm

  • The tackle was reckless as any upending tackle is, but the reaction and "standard" 10-week ban is overkill. If you are going to require that a player gently bring one's opponent to the turf when tackling, you may as well remove the ability to lift when tackling in any manner. It surely is the best way to stop forward advance, if it can be done. But here, the end result was not from a malicious intent to drop Olly on his head but rather an extremely aggessive tackle with "intent" to stop progress and drive him to the ground. The "intent" in this matter is far less egregious than Vickery'd kick to the knee, which had obvious intent.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at September 19, 2007 10:23 pm

  • I often wonder whether or not spear tackles like this are unavoidable. Surely any player knows that if they commit this offense they will be sent off. Why do it? It can and is only viewed one way - a careless, dangerous tackle. There has to be a momentum arguement to be made - that if you tackle a forward moving player just a little lower than the hips and lift, even slightly, he's going to go arse over tit. And I don't care who you are you're not going to be strong enough to lower any player down gently. And even if you try you may worsen the situation.
But of course it must be penalised otherwise there will be a free for all with everyone claiming it was unintentional. But I just think that some - maybe not all - are miscued tackles resulting in the unfortunate repercussions of physics. But oh well, what can you do.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at January 06, 2008 12:24 am

  • I love how you are trained in rugby to go full out. Then once you commit to a tackle, you have to stop, think about how you are going to control the momentum of an oncoming player. The micromanagement of tackle, yes, physics has a lot to do with it, is very hard to control. Damned if you do, damed if you don't. Go to high you get penalized, go to low and the the guy goes 'ass over tit' as someone said and if he lands incorrectly, the tackler is penalized.
