Huge tackle from Hawkes Bay's Hikairo Forbes against Northland

We've got a bit of a history with posting big hits here on RD. Everyone loves seeing them after all, so here's a quick clip of a great tackle that happened in New Zealand's brilliant ITM Cup recently.

As you are well aware of, it's a crazy period on the rugby calendar, what with the Tri Nations, World Cup war-up matches, and then of course the Currie Cup and ITM Cup seasons. We're also do all sorts of behind the scenes stuff here with RD, so that's meant that the latter comps have admittedly had to have been neglected a bit, unfortunately.

What always helps though is when a user submits a request for something specific. It just makes the whole process of finding the best bits that much easier, quicker, and more rewarding for everyone involved. This was the case with today's post, as someone watched the match, noted the tackle, then dropped a post in the Request section on the forum. Easy.

So if you find yourself watching a lot of Currie Cup or ITM Cup lately, please feel free to do the same so that great moments can be shared with the world here on the site. Of course that applies to internationals too, of which we have bucket loads of in just ten days time.

This great hit came from Hawkes Bay's hooker Hikairo Forbes on Northland's replacement flanker Joel McKenty. It's nice to see a good old fashioned dump tackle that isn't penalised.

Northland won the match 43-34.

  • Great tackle. Looked like he almost just dropped him though, particularly as the tackler was still on his feet afterwards.

  • I just posted a long one in The Manu Tuilagi thread about which tackles should and should not be legal....... people have started to think that shoulders aren't involved in tackles anymore and an opposing player can never be lifted off the ground! ludicrous!!

Anyway this is the clearest example of a dump tackle you could find that even uses the ground for the final impact = Totally legal. Spear tackles that drive the opponents neck and head into the ground = Totally illegal

Front on shoulder tackles with or without arms = totally legal. If the player wants to risk being bounced off that's their choice. Side on Shoulder Charges without arms = illegal.

I hope the IRB reads this so the game return to its best.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at August 31, 2011 9:25 am

  • In South Africa its customary to gouge eyes ..................... yeah Brown Eyes! LMFAO!!!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at August 31, 2011 9:27 am

  • "isn't the law that if you pick a player ff the ground that you must go to ground with them? that was my understanding of the dump tackle law. regardless good hit"

    Not at all.

inf act there is no 'Dump law' or 'wrap law'.
Their are laws about ackling. The only one that has anything to do with dumping someone says that you must not lift a player off his feet and then force him to the ground so that his head or upper body hits the ground first.

It's a retarded rule (not the rule itself but the wording), that used to make sense (ie it used to be, dont drop a guy on his head or neck).

Now it can be interpreted in many different ways, because what does upper body mean? everything above the waist? Shoulders and up? It's not clear.

As a rule of thumb if a guy goes beyond the horizontal, and isnt carfully brought to ground it's probly gonna be called a penalty.

If he lands on his head, then the guy who does it is probly gonna get sent off (and that's fair enough).

The annoying thing is when a guy lands flat on his back or side and it gets called a penalty, when really it's just a text book tackle.

And the law about shoulder charging? All it says is that you must 'make an attempt' to 'grasp' the other player in some way, at some point during the tackle. That's it.

Basically it means, dont tuck your arms up, and run in sideways to hit just with the point of your shoulder.

  • Could have been 46-34 if he'd shipped it; I bought the dummy and thought it was a late tackle first time round. Sweet old school technique though, when these come off they look and feel effortless for everyone but the ball carrier.

  • I have seen many rugby videos to the contrary of those people talking about other nations poking anus'

    ...or is it ani....

We have seen 2 NZ players go in for the kill...

By Anonymous Anonymous, at August 31, 2011 2:30 pm

  • Oh look, a player lifted off his feet in the tackle who was brought to ground without his upper body coming into contact with the ground first. From listening to all the "Rugby is going soft" posters on here you'd think that was a physical impossibility.

Note the way the tackler didn't tip the player. Nice, legal, tackle.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at August 31, 2011 2:48 pm

  • Thank goodness for tackles like this still in the modern game. If that had got pinged it would a sign that everything that represents the hard hitting but fair nature of this great sport is gone.

I understand that tackle laws are there to protect players and rightly so. If a tackle like that is illegal on the ground of being dangerous it is not because one was trying to hurt the other it was because it was two hefty guys smashing into each other will sometimes cause injury.
